Overview

Music by Giuseppe Verdi, Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave

After the rousing success of last season’s performances of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, producers Eric Mahl and Sarah Joyce Cooper return to Downeast, Maine with a fully-staged, fresh interpretation of Verdi’s La Traviata. Featuring the Opera Acadia Orchestra & Chorus, this immersive, colorful, and heart-wrenching production directed by Marshall Hughes showcases the talents of Downeast favorites alongside internationally renowned singers, whose talents have graced stages across the US and Europe.

From tragedy, Violetta has risen to the pinnacle of late 1960’s high-society, demanding the attention and intrigue of the wealthiest and most highly-esteemed men and women of the elite. Yet, beneath a shiny and glamorous exterior, Violetta longs for love. Desperate to keep her devastating illness a secret, she is running out of time to find the happiness that has eluded her for so long. Drama of the highest order unfolds as she navigates love and sacrifice in one of the greatest operas ever written.
